The organization tokened the phrase "Jump On It" because we wanted the community to “Jump On” the bandwagon of reclaiming our black and brown neighborhoods in east Austin. Founded in 1997 by the then teenager, Charles "NOOK Turner" Byrd, the late Dorothy Turner and his mother Sharon Ellerby, Jump On It became a summer tradition that brought out thousands of people weekly. Throughout the years programming evolved from an annual, weekly summer concert series into an educational program, a community/youth advocacy org, into now what we call Jump On It Society (JOISO)! JOISO encompasses Black culture 360 that brings people together by producing cultural festivals, workshops and life resources for youth and adults.
